Back to job search
We’re representing an Australian based real estate asset management firm in seeking a senior executive who can bridge energy policy, market reform, and large-scale commercial development across Australia’s National Electricity Market. This is a rare role for someone with true end-to-end credibility — from Cabinet-level climate policy and regulatory design through to originating, negotiating, and delivering billion-dollar generation and storage assets.
You’ll lead strategy and execution at the intersection of government, regulation, and market investment. If you’ve shaped NEM rules, influenced ministerial decisions, and closed deals on 1GW+ Digital Infrastructure projects, this is your seat.
Key responsibilities
- Identify, acquire, and commercialise greenfield & brownfield generation/storage sites. Recent benchmarks: 1,000MW OCGT, 500MW/4hr BESS, data centre integration, $20M+ value creation on single sites.
- Convert complex regulatory frameworks, market reforms, and government policy signals into bankable commercial strategies and board-ready investment cases.
- Leverage deep relationships across Commonwealth & Victorian Government, AEMC, AER, AEMO, and ESC to secure development approvals, shape market rules, and de-risk projects.
- Lead multi-disciplinary teams of 20+ across legal, commercial, engineering, and policy. Coordinate without direct authority to deliver complex outcomes under pressure.
- Anticipate systemic NEM risks — inertia, reliability, network access, emissions — and position the portfolio ahead of rule changes. Lead interventions that reshape the market itself.
Key Requirements
- You bring 20+ years shaping the NEM from every angle:
- Government: Led Victorian climate policy as Manager, Climate Change in Dept of Premier & Cabinet. Lead author of the Climate Change Green & White Papers. Represented Australia at COP15 Copenhagen.
- Regulation: Senior roles at AER, Victorian ESC, and as Head of Regulation at Ausgrid, AGL, and SIMEC Energy. Delivered Ausgrid’s $8.2B Regulatory Proposal. Initiated AEMC rule changes on inertia that became market law.
Commercial Development: Currently Head of Development at Origin Energy. Executed acquisition of Kerrawary & Templers West sites. Led due diligence for Macquarie Generation acquisition. Developed $1B renewable programs at SIMEC.
- Industry Leadership: Former Chair, Australian Energy Council Wholesale Markets Working Group. Industry observer on AEMO Board. Deep credibility with ministers, CEOs, and boards.
- Energy Policy & Strategy: NEM market design, reform, decarbonisation pathways, wholesale/retail regulation
- Deal Origination & Execution: Site acquisition, DA approvals, investment committee submissions, M&A due diligence
- Stakeholder Mastery: Trusted advisor to government, regulators, boards, and Tier-1 customers like CDC, Tomago, Portland
- Team Leadership: Build high-performing teams; awarded Victorian Premier’s Award for climate policy contributions
- Qualifications: BEc (Hons), MEnv Law, ANZSOG Strategic Leadership
